Chinese cars: an overview for Ugandan buyers

Chinese manufacturers now produce SUVs, pickups, sedans, and electric vehicles that match Japanese and Korean models on specification while undercutting them on price by 20 to 40 percent. Brands such as BYD, Haval, MG, Chery, JAC, and Changan have expanded their export programmes significantly, and vehicles from these brands are increasingly common on Ugandan roads. For buyers in Kampala and across Uganda, the combination of factory-direct pricing and a wide range of body types makes Chinese cars a practical and cost-effective alternative to used Japanese imports.

Modern Chinese vehicles from BYD, Haval, MG, Chery, JAC, and Foton are built to operate across demanding climates and road surfaces. Many models are sold across East Africa, Central Africa, and the Middle East without modification. For Ugandan buyers driving in Kampala traffic, on rural murram roads, or on the Northern or Eastern bypasses, Chinese SUVs and pickups with adequate ground clearance handle conditions well. JAC pickups, GWM Tank SUVs, and Haval H9 units are particularly well-regarded for mixed tarmac and off-road use.

We supply all vehicle categories: SUVs, sedans, hatchbacks, MPVs, pickup trucks, vans, minibuses, and heavy commercial vehicles including trucks and buses. Powertrains available include battery electric (BEV), plug-in hybrid (PHEV), full hybrid (HEV), petrol, diesel, and commercial configurations. Whether you need a compact city car for Kampala, a capable 4WD for upcountry driving, or a fleet of diesel pickups for a construction project, we can source it directly from the Chinese factory.

We source from all major Chinese manufacturers: BYD, Chery, Haval, MG, Geely, Changan, JAC, Foton, GWM, Aion, Xiaomi, BAIC, Shacman, Denza, Zeekr, Avatr, FAW, HOWO, and more. If a vehicle is produced in China and available for export, we can source it. For Ugandan buyers this includes both passenger vehicles and the commercial and heavy vehicles widely used in logistics, mining, and construction across Uganda.

Most vehicles currently entering Uganda through the used import route are second-hand Japanese models with unknown service histories, aged components, and no factory warranty. Chinese Cars in Uganda supplies brand-new factory vehicles at export pricing, with full documentation, manufacturer warranty, and a known specification. On a delivered-cost basis, a new Chinese SUV or pickup from us is often comparable to or lower than a well-specified used Japanese equivalent once shipping, clearing, and registration costs are factored in for both options.

We accept single-unit and fleet orders. Individual buyers, small businesses, and large fleet operators across Uganda are all welcome. Single-unit pricing is factory-direct CIF to your destination port (Mombasa or Dar es Salaam). Fleet orders of 5 units or more qualify for volume pricing, and we can discuss staggered delivery schedules for larger fleet programmes.

Yes. Chinese Cars in Uganda is an authorised Chinese vehicle dealer with a physical office in China. We source directly from Chinese manufacturers and authorised Chinese exporters, issue commercial invoices, manage export customs clearance, and ship vehicles to buyer-nominated ports. We are not a marketplace, broker, or price comparison platform. We sell vehicles and issue the paperwork that travels with every unit.

Pricing and invoicing is in USD. International wire transfer (T/T) is the standard payment method. Payment is typically structured as a deposit to confirm the order and the balance before shipment. Ugandan buyers commonly convert Uganda Shillings (UGX) to USD through their bank or a licensed forex bureau in Kampala before initiating the wire. We will confirm the full payment schedule when we issue the proforma invoice.

Popular Chinese car brands for Ugandan buyers

We supply the full BYD export range: Atto 3 (compact EV SUV), Seal (electric sports sedan), Han EV (executive electric sedan), Dolphin (compact EV hatchback), Tang (large PHEV SUV), Yangwang U8 (luxury off-road PHEV), Seagull (entry EV city car), and the BYD Shark (PHEV pickup). BYD vehicles are shipped to Mombasa port and then transported inland to Uganda by road. For buyers in Kampala with access to a charging point at home or work, BYD EVs represent some of the best factory-direct value available.

The Haval H9 is the top choice for buyers who need a large, capable 4WD for mixed tarmac and off-road use in Uganda. It offers a full-size body-on-frame build, high ground clearance, 4WD with low-range transfer case, and is available in 2.0T petrol and diesel configurations. The H6 and Jolion are strong mid-range SUV options for primarily urban and highway use. All Haval models are well-established across East Africa and parts availability is broader than for many newer Chinese brands entering the region.

MG has built solid recognition across East Africa. The MG HS (compact SUV, petrol and PHEV), ZS EV (electric compact SUV), MG 5 EV (electric sedan), and RX8 (large SUV) are all available for export to Uganda. MG vehicles tend to carry competitive factory pricing and, for buyers near Kampala, the MG ZS EV is a practical option given that home charging is accessible in most residential areas of the capital.

Yes. The Chery Tiggo 8 Pro and Tiggo 8 Pro Max are large seven-seat SUVs with petrol and PHEV options, well-regarded across East Africa for interior space, feature specification, and value at factory-direct pricing. The Tiggo 7 Pro is a compact five-seat SUV popular with buyers who want a capable car for Kampala driving and occasional upcountry trips. Chery vehicles are well-distributed and spare parts availability in Uganda is improving year by year as the brand grows its East Africa footprint.

GAC Aion produces some of the best-value electric vehicles available from China. The Aion Y is a compact EV SUV with up to 600km NEDC range. The Aion S is an electric sedan. The Aion V is a larger EV SUV. The Aion LX is the flagship luxury EV. For Ugandan buyers with home charging, an Aion Y or Aion S provides low running costs in a city like Kampala where fuel costs and traffic are both significant factors. We ship Aion vehicles to Mombasa port for onward transit to Uganda.

For commercial buyers in Uganda, we supply Foton (Tunland pickup and Aumark light truck range), JAC (T6 and T8 pickups, light trucks, minibuses), Shacman (heavy trucks for construction and logistics), FAW (long-haul tractor units and dump trucks), HOWO (tipper trucks), and King Long and Yutong (bus and minibus range). Uganda’s construction sector, logistics operators, and NGO fleets have been active buyers of Chinese commercial vehicles, with JAC and Foton pickups and Shacman trucks particularly prevalent on major infrastructure projects across the country.

The Xiaomi SU7 is a high-demand EV sedan produced by Xiaomi Automobile. Export availability is subject to factory allocation schedules and varies by market. Submit an enquiry specifying the SU7, your destination, and preferred specification and our team will confirm current availability and lead time for Uganda.

SUVs and model selection for Uganda

The right Chinese SUV for Uganda depends on how and where you drive. For primarily urban and highway use in Kampala, the Haval H6, MG HS, BYD Atto 3, and Chery Tiggo 7 Pro are well-proven options at different price points. For buyers who regularly drive on murram roads, rural tracks, or routes in the west or north of the country, the Haval H9, GWM Tank 300, or JAC T8 pickup offer the ground clearance and 4WD capability you need. Fleet buyers for NGOs and construction projects typically favour the H9 and Tank 300 for mixed-terrain reliability.

The GWM Tank 300 is a compact off-road SUV built on a ladder-frame chassis, available in 2.0T petrol and PHEV. It offers genuine 4WD with locking differentials, high wading depth, and a well-finished interior. In Uganda, it competes with the Jeep Wrangler and Land Cruiser Prado at a fraction of the landed cost. For buyers who need off-road capability in areas like Karamoja, the Rwenzori foothills, or remote project sites, the Tank 300 delivers where softer SUVs cannot.

The BYD Atto 3 is a compact electric SUV with up to 480km NEDC range, fast charging capability, and a feature-rich interior. At factory-direct CIF pricing to Mombasa, it is typically 25 to 35 percent below a comparable petrol Japanese compact SUV delivered through a local dealer in Kampala. For buyers in the city who have home or workplace charging, the Atto 3’s running costs per kilometre are substantially lower than a petrol equivalent, making it a sound medium-term investment.

Seven-seat Chinese SUVs available for export to Uganda include the Chery Tiggo 8 Pro, Haval H9, BYD Tang PHEV, Geely Monjaro, and Changan CS95. The Tiggo 8 Pro is the most popular seven-seater in the mid-range, offering strong specification at a competitive factory price. The Haval H9 is the preferred choice where genuine off-road capability is needed alongside seven seats.

Yes. BYD Yangwang U8, Avatr 11, Denza N8, Geely Galaxy, and Hongqi H9 are among the luxury-segment Chinese vehicles we can source. These compete with European brands on interior specification and technology features at a significantly lower factory price delivered to Mombasa. Submit an enquiry specifying the model and we will confirm export availability and current pricing.

For buyers based in Kampala or other major towns where home charging at 240V is accessible, a Chinese EV SUV is practical today. Most Chinese EVs support Type 2 AC charging (7 to 22kW) and DC fast charging (60 to 150kW). In areas outside the main urban centres where public charging is limited and power supply is intermittent, a petrol, diesel, or PHEV option is more reliable. A PHEV such as the BYD Tang or GWM Tank 300 PHEV gives the efficiency of electric driving in town with petrol backup for long-distance or upcountry travel, making it a strong all-round choice for Uganda.

Pickups and commercial vehicles for Uganda

We supply JAC T6 and T8 (double cab, petrol and diesel), Foton Tunland G7 (double cab diesel), GWM Cannon (petrol and diesel double cab), Changan Hunter (double cab PHEV and diesel), and the BYD Shark (PHEV double cab pickup). All are available in right-hand drive for Uganda’s left-hand traffic. These models are widely used on infrastructure projects, by NGO fleets, and by agricultural and logistics operators across Uganda.

Factory-direct pricing on a fully-specified Chinese double-cab diesel pickup delivered CIF to Mombasa is typically 25 to 40 percent below a comparable Toyota Hilux purchased through a local dealer in Kampala. The JAC T8 diesel and Foton Tunland G7 offer full specification including leather trim, advanced driver assistance systems, and strong payload ratings. For NGOs and businesses running cost-per-kilometre calculations, the Chinese alternatives offer a compelling total cost of ownership against a new Hilux at Ugandan dealer prices.

Yes. Chinese commercial vehicle brands including Foton, JAC, Shacman, and FAW have established track records across East Africa in construction, mining, logistics, and agriculture. Shacman X3000 and FAW J7 heavy trucks are used on major road infrastructure and mining projects across Uganda and the wider region. The combination of factory-direct pricing and robust build specifications for African operating conditions makes them strong alternatives to Japanese and European heavy vehicles at a lower capital cost.

Yes. We supply JAC Sunray (petrol and diesel minibus, up to 17 seats), Yutong minibus range, King Long passenger vans and coaches, and Higer bus models. For corporate shuttle services, hotel transfer, school transport, or public transit operators in Uganda, we can supply right-hand drive configurations. Include your seat count, powertrain preference, and delivery timeline in your enquiry.

Freight costs for commercial vehicles depend on vehicle dimensions, weight, port of loading in China, and your destination port. For Uganda-bound shipments, Mombasa is the standard arrival port, with vehicles then cleared and transported to Kampala by road (approximately 1,100km inland). A standard double-cab pickup on a RORO vessel from China to Mombasa typically costs USD 900 to USD 1,500 in freight. Heavy trucks on flat-rack or breakbulk are higher. Clearing, inland transport, and registration costs in Uganda are separate and are the buyer’s responsibility. We provide a full CIF quotation per vehicle on request.

Yes. Fleet orders of 3 or more vehicles attract factory-level volume pricing. Orders of 10 or more can qualify for additional factory discount depending on model and specification. Government agencies, construction contractors, NGOs, and logistics operators in Uganda regularly place fleet orders through us. Include your required vehicle type, quantity, specification, and delivery timeline in your enquiry and we will provide a fleet quotation.

For heavy haulage, mining, and construction work in Uganda, we supply Shacman X3000 and F3000 (6×4 and 8×4 configurations), FAW J7 and J6 (long-haul tractor units), HOWO A7 and T7H (tipper and cargo variants), and Foton Auman (medium-heavy trucks). Shacman and HOWO tippers are particularly prevalent on road construction and quarry projects across Uganda. CAMC and Sinotruk are also available on request.

Export process, shipping, and costs to Uganda

The standard process is: you submit an enquiry and confirm the vehicle, we issue a proforma invoice, you pay a deposit to confirm the order, we source from the factory or stock, arrange pre-shipment inspection, handle Chinese export customs clearance, book freight to Mombasa port (the main entry point for Uganda-bound vehicle shipments), and prepare all export documentation. Transit from the Chinese port of loading to Mombasa typically takes 20 to 30 days. After arrival at Mombasa, import clearance, inland transit to Kampala, and local registration are the buyer’s responsibility.

Vessel transit from a Chinese loading port (typically Shanghai, Guangzhou, or Tianjin) to Mombasa takes 20 to 30 days. After arrival at Mombasa, customs clearance and inland road transport from Mombasa to Kampala adds approximately 5 to 10 working days depending on the clearing agent and whether the vehicle is travelling bonded transit through Kenya or cleared in Uganda directly. Total lead time from order confirmation to the vehicle arriving in Kampala is typically 6 to 10 weeks.

FOB (Free on Board) means our price covers the vehicle and all costs up to loading it onto the vessel at the Chinese port. You arrange and pay for the ocean freight from China to Mombasa. CIF (Cost, Insurance and Freight) means our price covers the vehicle, ocean freight, and marine cargo insurance to Mombasa port. For most Ugandan buyers, CIF to Mombasa is the more straightforward option as it gives a single total figure for the China side of the transaction.

Standard export documentation includes: commercial invoice (in USD), packing list, certificate of origin (China), bill of lading (original, issued after loading), and manufacturer’s certificate of conformity or vehicle inspection certificate. For Uganda Customs (Uganda Revenue Authority), the certificate of origin, commercial invoice, and bill of lading are the primary documents needed for import entry. If you require additional certification for your clearing agent, include that in your enquiry.

Uganda applies import duties on vehicles administered by the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA). Duty rates are based on the CIF value and vehicle category, and include import duty (typically 25 percent for passenger vehicles), VAT (18 percent on the duty-inclusive value), and withholding tax for commercial importers. EV-specific duty incentives may apply under Uganda’s green vehicle policy, though rates are subject to revision in annual budgets. Your clearing agent in Uganda will calculate the precise duty payable based on the current tariff schedule. We do not handle Uganda-side customs clearance, but we provide all documentation your agent needs.

Import clearance and vehicle registration in Uganda is the buyer’s responsibility. You will need a licensed customs clearing agent to process the import documentation through the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) at Mombasa or at the border entry point. After clearance, the vehicle is registered with the Uganda Revenue Authority and the Ministry of Works and Transport. We provide complete export documentation from China to support your clearing agent’s work.

Yes. We can arrange a pre-shipment inspection by an independent third-party inspection company in China before the vehicle is loaded. The inspection report covers vehicle condition, VIN verification, specification confirmation, and compliance with export requirements. This is recommended for all orders, particularly fleet purchases and high-value vehicles.

Yes. Our CIF pricing includes marine cargo insurance from the Chinese port of loading to Mombasa port. Coverage applies to the CIF value against total loss or significant damage during transit. For high-value orders or buyers who require additional coverage, we can arrange extended insurance terms on request.

Pricing and value for Ugandan buyers

On a factory-direct delivered basis, Chinese vehicles typically cost 25 to 45 percent less than equivalent Japanese and Korean models bought new through a Ugandan dealer or imported used from Japan. A fully-specified Chinese mid-size SUV with advanced driver assistance systems, a large touchscreen, and modern safety features will generally land in Uganda at a price that undercuts a comparable used Japanese model by a significant margin. For fleet buyers where per-unit capital cost matters, this differential is a primary reason Chinese vehicles have gained ground rapidly across Uganda and the wider East Africa market.

CIF pricing to Mombasa varies by model, specification, and prevailing freight rates. As a general guide: compact EV SUVs (BYD Atto 3, MG ZS EV, Aion Y) range from USD 22,000 to USD 30,000 CIF. Mid-size petrol or hybrid SUVs (Haval H6, Chery Tiggo 7 Pro) range from USD 18,000 to USD 28,000 CIF. Large body-on-frame SUVs (Haval H9, GWM Tank 300) range from USD 28,000 to USD 45,000 CIF. Double-cab diesel pickups (JAC T8, Foton Tunland G7) range from USD 18,000 to USD 28,000 CIF. Heavy trucks are quoted separately based on specification.

Beyond the CIF Mombasa price, your total landed cost in Uganda will include: Uganda import duty (approximately 25 percent of CIF value for passenger vehicles), VAT at 18 percent on the duty-inclusive value, withholding tax where applicable, clearing agent fees in Kenya and Uganda (typically USD 400 to USD 800 combined), inland transport from Mombasa to Kampala (approximately USD 600 to USD 1,200 depending on vehicle size), and Uganda vehicle registration fees payable to the Ministry of Works and Transport. Your clearing agent will provide a landed cost breakdown before clearance begins.

Factory-direct export pricing is already at the lowest available market rate, as we remove the local dealer margin. For fleet orders of 5 or more vehicles, volume discounts are available and we will include these in the proforma invoice. Single-unit pricing reflects current factory and freight costs and is not subject to negotiation, but it is already significantly below what a Ugandan dealer would charge for an equivalent new vehicle.

For buyers in Kampala and major towns with reliable electricity supply, Chinese EVs typically cost significantly less per kilometre to run than petrol or diesel equivalents. Umeme grid electricity costs in Uganda make the per-kilometre cost of an EV substantially lower than petrol at current pump prices. BYD, Aion, and MG EVs are proving efficient across East African markets with flat-to-rolling terrain. The caveat for Uganda is that power supply reliability varies by area, so a PHEV such as the BYD Tang or GWM Tank 300 PHEV offers a practical fallback for areas with inconsistent grid power.

We accept international bank wire transfer (T/T) in USD. A standard order requires a deposit of 30 percent to confirm the order and begin production or stock allocation, with the balance due before shipment departure. Ugandan buyers transfer USD from a local bank account or via a forex bureau in Kampala. For fleet orders, payment schedules can be structured differently and we will confirm this in the proforma invoice. We do not accept mobile money, cryptocurrency, or payment in Uganda Shillings (UGX).

After-sales, warranties, and support for Uganda

Factory warranties from Chinese manufacturers are typically 3 years or 100,000km for the vehicle, with 8 years or 160,000km on the EV battery for electric models. Some brands including BYD and MG offer extended warranties on specific models. For buyers in Uganda, warranty claims are handled through the brand’s East Africa distributor where one exists (MG and BYD have growing regional networks), or through the manufacturer’s process for markets without an authorised distributor.

Parts availability varies by brand. MG, BYD, Chery, and Haval have the broadest distribution in East Africa, with authorised service centres now operating in Nairobi and beginning to establish in Kampala and other Ugandan cities. For brands without established local distribution, parts can be sourced from China and imported directly, typically with a lead time of 2 to 4 weeks. Common service items including filters, brake components, and tyres use standard international fitment sizes and can be sourced locally at any qualified workshop in Uganda.

Yes. Basic service work including oil changes, brake service, tyre fitting, and air filter replacement can be performed at any qualified workshop in Kampala or upcountry. Chinese vehicles use standard international fitment sizes for filters, brakes, and tyres. For electronics diagnostics on vehicles with advanced systems (BYD, Xiaomi, Aion), a compatible OBD2 scanner covers most diagnostic requirements. Authorised service for specific brands is expanding in Uganda as Chinese vehicle volumes in the market grow.

Any defects noted at the time of pre-shipment inspection in China are recorded and addressed before the vehicle is shipped. For defects discovered after arrival, the process depends on whether the issue arose during transit or is a manufacturing defect. Transit damage is covered under the marine insurance included in our CIF pricing. Manufacturing defects are handled through the manufacturer’s warranty process. We assist with documentation between the buyer and the manufacturer where needed.

Leading Chinese EV manufacturers including BYD, Aion, Zeekr, and Xiaomi design battery thermal management systems for wide temperature operating ranges. BYD Blade Battery technology maintains performance across ambient temperatures typical of Uganda’s equatorial climate. For the paved roads of Kampala and the main national highways, Chinese EVs perform consistently. For rough road surfaces in rural areas, the suspension and ground clearance of the specific model matters more than the powertrain, so check ground clearance specifications for your intended use before ordering.

Our direct support covers the buying and export process: vehicle sourcing, pricing, order management, export documentation, and shipping logistics from China to Mombasa port. For in-country after-sales service in Uganda, we advise on available brand service networks and parts sourcing routes, but in-country workshop service and parts procurement are outside our direct scope. We are the China-side operation; your clearing agent and local service workshop are the Uganda-side contacts post-delivery.

Yes. Uganda drives on the left, so right-hand drive vehicles are required. We source right-hand drive configurations for all models where the manufacturer produces them. BYD, MG, Haval, Chery, JAC, and Foton all produce right-hand drive variants for East African markets including Uganda. For models available only in left-hand drive (some newer EV platforms), we will confirm this in our response to your enquiry before you commit to an order.
